Autograph Manuscript of “Battle Hymn of the Republic”
Dublin Core
Title
Autograph Manuscript of “Battle Hymn of the Republic”
Description
We present two copies of Julia Ward Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” One is a handwritten manuscript, and one is a printed pamphlet with “Suffrage Song” on the reverse.
Howe published “Battle Hymn” in 1862 in the popular Atlantic Monthly literary magazine. It quickly became the anthem of the North during the Civil War, endlessly quoted, reworked, and remixed throughout the country and throughout history as a rallying cry for countless other subsequent social causes. However, her name did not appear in the Atlantic Monthly, and she was never widely credited for her song’s popularity.
