“Suffrage Song” / “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Dublin Core
Title
“Suffrage Song” / “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Description
We present two copies of Julia Ward Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” One is a handwritten manuscript, and one is a printed pamphlet with “Suffrage Song” on the reverse.
Howe’s song was reused as “Battle Hymn of the Suffragettes” to support her work as a prominent suffragist leader. The accompanying “Suffrage Song” reclaims another patriotic song for women’s rights in the same way. Both parodies received backlash from anti-suffragists, despite Howe’s agency to alter her own work. This custom pamphlet was intended for use at rallies where participants sang these songs, and finally includes Howe’s name on her song.
