Title
Young Woman
Description
This photograph is of an African American “Young Woman” accredited to a studio known as Darby. This object exists now as a part of the Loewentheil Collection of African-American Photographs in the Rare and Manuscript Collections at Cornell University. The subject of the photograph is a young African American woman who casually leans against a small covered table. She gazes directly at the camera with her head cradled in her left hand, is positioned forward-facing, and sits fairly upright suggesting a level of confidence and comfortability with her station. She points to her temple, which may allude to a variety of meanings, including recognition of her intelligence, a capacity to meet intellectual rigor through the gesturing of her hand and the unflinching nature of her gaze, and also a recognition of her skin color perhaps showing her awareness of the rights and racial justice black women were fighting for through the end of the 19th century.
